Georgia Sports Hall of Fame & Ocmulgee National Monument—Macon, Georgia

To learn about exciting archaeological discoveries across Georgia, the Society for Georgia Archaeology invites you to join us at our 2013 Spring Meeting scheduled for Saturday, May 18th at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame located at 301 Cherry Street in Macon, Georgia. The theme for Archaeology Month 2013 is Digging and Diving into the Past: Celebrating 20 Years of Georgia Archaeology Awareness. The SGA is proud to return to Macon to celebrate this important milestone. Pre-registration is available online here through Sunday, May 12th, or you may register on-site beginning at 8:30 a.m. You may also register by mail by sending in a completed registration form, available here. The cost of the event is $5.00 for students, $10.00 for members, and $15.00 for non-members. You may also sign up and pre-pay for a box lunch (i.e., Subway sandwich, chips, cookie, and a drink), but please note that this option is only available through Sunday, May 12th to give us time to order lunches.

The meeting will begin with registration and check-in followed by a welcome announcement, then launch into presentations on “Research, Education, and Outreach at Georgia Archaeological Sites.” We will take a short break and then hear presentations on “Recent Investigations at Ocmulgee National Monument.” We will have a short business meeting, offer the SGA-Georgia Ports Authority presentation “Georgia Time Capsule,” and break for lunch. You must pre-pay if you would like a box lunch. We will reconvene at Ocmulgee National Monument, with a tour of the “Plateaus” by Dan Bigman beginning at 1:30 p.m. Then, attendees will be on their own to visit the newly renovated National Park Service museum or visit Dunlap Hill (with the Mississippian period Dunlap Mound and the Historic Dunlap House) to the north of the museum. Attendees are also invited to visit Fort Hawkins near the monument. A PDF of the schedule, with event times, for the SGA’s 2013 Spring meeting can be accessed by visiting here.

Throughout the month of May, organizations, museums, parks, and historic sites in communities across the state are sponsoring educational programs and events to promote public awareness of the existence and value of Georgia’s archaeological resources. This year marks the 20th year of SGA’s archaeology awareness promotion, which fosters better public awareness of archaeology and a sense of stewardship for our state’s archaeological sites. This year’s theme, Digging and Diving into the Past: Celebrating 20 Years of Georgia Archaeology Awareness, will reach thousands of Georgians through educational materials and events. With Georgia’s wide spectrum of archaeological sites—from Native American cultures dating as far back as 12,000 years to Civil War battlefields to 19th-century shipwrecks—there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
